Visiting The Gambia

By Robert Servant

The Gambia is one of the smallest countries in Africa but it has a rich and varied history, a strong cultural identity and a range of landscapes.  If you can prise yourself away from the luxurious beaches and lavish resorts, enjoy the exhilarating activities throughout the country.

Bakau

Bakau is full of liveliness and culture, the city is worth as much time you can give it.  Here you can get the best of both worlds.  Treat yourself in their fabulous shops and markets.  Relax on Sun Beach where you can admire the dramatic coastline with red rock cliffs perched between golden sandy beaches overlooking luscious clear blue water.  Sun Beach is a vista for Gambia’s stunning sun sets.  Let the inner adventurer out to play in the Katchikali Sacred Crocodile Pool.  The popular attraction is believed to have supernatural healing not to mention fascinating crocodiles, which thankfully are tame!

Banjul

Banjul cleverly blends all walks of African life together.  There are many intriguing colonial buildings including 22 July Square to awe-over.  Look out for the War Memorial and stunning fountain that was built to commemorate the coronation of King George VI of Britain in 1937.  Be sure to visit the Abuko Nature Reserve, which is like a jungle in the middle of a savannah.  Feast your eyes on their 250 bird species, crocodiles, monkeys, hyenas and much more.

Kotu

Kotu is home to exquisite beaches, elude in one of their several luxurious private sections.  Set your mind free on the golden sand of Kombo Beach, where the tranquil solitude is only broken by the soft breeze sifting through the palm trees and the gentle tide creeping in.  If you can prise your-self away from the stunning beaches, enjoy a game of golf in one of Kotu’s several invigorating courses.  Kotu is a fantastic place to relax whilst enjoying a quieter more refined way of life.

Round Up
