Whale Watching in the Dominican Republic

Whale Watching in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic, known for its white, sandy beaches and rich history, is also home to one of the worlds’ most premier whale watching facilities.

Every spring, the beautiful Samana Bay, located on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, becomes home to thousands of humpback whales.  Migrating from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean each winter, the humpback whales chose the 3,000 square kilometre reef system in Silver Bank to mate and give birth.  The whale watching season lasts from the middle of January until the end March and with the time scale being so small visitors can experience a very exclusive type of tour which makes for a perfect family activity. Younger travellers will love the opportunity for adventure on the ocean waves, whilst both children and adults alike are likely to be excited and enthralled at the sight of these majestic mammals.

Whilst there are a number of reputable travel companies that cater for whale watching, TheLuxury Travel Guide recommends the highly rated Whale Samana.  With space for between 50 to 80 people and having whale expert Kim Beddall, founder of whale watching in Samana on board, Whale Samana gives travellers the unique opportunity to see humpback whales in their natural mating ground.

Why not extend your Samana Bay trip by exploring the area further and taking advantage of other activities offered in the area.  Although famed for its whale watching, the province of Samana also plays host to a number of other excursions for travellers to experience.  See the vast, lush tropical forest from above by zip lining the Samaná Ziplines’ El Valle trip. Ending in the Lulu Waterfall swimming spot, it’s a must for those looking for a mixture of thrills and relaxation.  Alternatively, opt for the diving and catamaran excursion , snorkel in the stunning bay of Samaná and anchor at Cayo Farola, well known for its diverse and colourful wildlife. Upon arrival at Cayo Levantado, experience the turquoise waters and gorgeous beach by taking a relaxing swim. There is also the chance to purchase crafts from the beachside gift shops – the perfect way to take home memories of your whale watching experience.
