Five Alternatives to the Traditional Wedding Cake

By Saadia Sharif

From the fairy-tale white dress to the perfect honeymoon getaway, tradition plays an integral part for many couples on their wedding day. The well-known three-tiered wedding cake has come to be a significant feature in weddings since its Ancient Roman origins but has it become outdated?  If you feel that the traditional wedding cake isn’t quite your style, here are five alternatives to broaden your horizons.

Croquembouche

Originating in France, a croquembouche is an elegant tower of profiteroles stacked within a cone shape. Adorned with spun sugar (with the option of other confectionery embellishments), this sophisticated dessert makes a beautiful centrepiece and talking point at any wedding.

Cheese Cake

While the classic sweet dessert may come to mind, this is a different type of cheese cake – consisting of a variety of cheeses.  It’s perfect for those with a more savoury preference, and allows you and your partner to add a personal touch by way of choosing a combination of your own favourite cheeses.

Macaron Tower

Macarons have gained popularity for their versatility in both flavour and colour, as well as their taste. With two crisp outer shells sandwiching a buttercream filling, they provide a light yet delicious treat. Macaron towers have proved to be a well-received alternative as they are able to accommodate a wider range of flavours than a traditional three tiered cake. Macarons are also incredibly yielding to almost any colour palette, which means that their design will easily complement your special day.

Cupcakes

If you still want to show respect to the tradition of a wedding cake, why not consider an assortment of cupcakes or mini cakes? Bespoke cupcakes ensure that each of your guests receive their own personal cake, making them feel like a part of the celebration too. Not only are they a great way to show affection to your loved ones, but they are also suitable as wedding favours too!

Sweet Stacks

Do you and your partner have a sweet tooth? If so, it may be worth looking into a stack of your favourite saccharine treats instead of a cake. Doughnut stacks/towers have become increasingly popular as an alternative to wedding cakes and is sure to catch your guests’ eyes. Brownie stacks are also a firm favourite and can be served with ice cream too, or personalised iced biscuits that can be served with hot drinks to turn your reception into a stylish tea party.

These alternatives to a wedding cake are a subtle yet graceful way to add a fresh touch to your wedding. By having your own personal choice, you can modernise your wedding without rejecting the long-running traditions.
