Six most popular resorts in Greece
Greece can be given a solid “A” in terms of tourism, because it has everything you could want and even more. Ecologically clean beaches awarded with the Blue Flag, a wonderful Mediterranean climate, delicious cuisine and most importantly - a whole treasure trove of attractions that have been preserved since ancient times.
You can go on holiday to Greek resorts with kids of any age, with your significant other, with a group of friends or alone - everyone will find something of their own in this hospitable sunny country and will definitely want to come back here again.
Resorts of Greece:
Crete is the largest island of Greece, washed by three seas (Libyan, Aegean and Ionian). It was here that the Minoan civilization, the oldest in Europe, once arose. There are a lot of beaches on the island, and their total length is more than 1000 km! All beaches are municipal, even those located near hotels. For hotel guests, sunbeds and umbrellas are usually free; all other beach visitors will have to pay to use the facilities.
Tourists come to Crete from April to October; it is comfortable to swim here from June to September. The average air temperature in the summer months is +27 °C, water temperature is +24 °C. The best tourist infrastructure is developed in the north of the island, where the four main resorts of Crete are located - Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania and Agios Nikolaos.
It is recommended to start your trip to Crete from its capital, Heraklion. The city has old neighborhoods and noteworthy museums, and it's also easy to reach major attractions, such as the famous Palace of Knossos. Rethymno is suitable for a beach holiday - the coast here is much better than in Heraklion. The resort also attracts visitors with its unusual architecture, which combines Turkish and Venetian traditions. Chania is a very picturesque town with narrow streets and a beautiful embankment. To the west is the famous Greek beach of Elafonisi with pink sand. Agios Nikolaos is suitable for wealthy tourists - it is not for nothing that it is called the “Cretan Saint-Tropez”.
❕A trip to Crete is a great reason to try Greek cuisine, which has its own characteristics in different regions. Tourists highly praise the local pita gyros shawarma, souvlaki kebabs on skewers, pea pudding, cold coffee and an exotic dish - octopus cooked over coals. As a souvenir, you can bring with you from your vacation a jar of local olives, olive oil, or a hand-painted Greek amphora. A luxurious gift will be a fur coat made of natural fur, bought in Crete.❕
The architecture of the island is very diverse; Orthodox churches coexist with mosques. Must see in Crete - Knossos Palace with the legendary labyrinth of the Minotaur, the Preveli Monastery (nearby there is a beach of the same name with palm trees), the Lassithi plateau, the Samaria Gorge, Lake Kournas with huge turtles, the Zoniana Cave, the harsh fortress of Spinalonga.
Rhodes
Would you like to relax on an island where the sun shines 300 days a year? Travel to Rhodes, the sunniest island in Greece! Here you can swim in two seas at the same time - the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet in the area of the Prasonisi Peninsula. The Greeks themselves call this place “the kiss of two seas.” For a relaxing beach holiday (including with children), the Mediterranean Sea is better - the Aegean Sea often has waves, so its beaches are more suitable for surfers. By the way, you can order Thessaloniki airport transfer, also if you want to travel further from Rhodes to Thessaloniki, this will be a great option to save money and time.
❕The most comfortable time in Rhodes is in the summer (July-August) and September, when the “velvet season” begins. The air temperature at this time remains at +28 °C, the sea heats up to +24…+25 °C. During the summer months, Rhodes is quite busy due to the influx of tourists - if you are looking for a secluded holiday, it is better to go in early autumn.❕
The famous Greek moussaka casserole, paidakyu lamb ribs, stewed lamb kleftiko, fried saganaki cheese - all these delicacies can and should be tried in Rhodes. You don’t have to go to a restaurant - the best national dishes, prepared according to family recipes, are served in small, homely taverns (and there are often desserts and drinks at the establishment’s expense).
You can begin your acquaintance with the sights of Rhodes from the Rhodes Fortress, built by medieval knights on the site of the ancient acropolis. The ancient city of Lindos, which Homer wrote about, is also good - the local acropolis is considered the second most important in Greece after the acropolis in Athens. The nature of the island in all its splendor opens up to the eyes of tourists in the Valley of the Butterflies, and, according to ancient belief, you can cleanse yourself of sins in a place called Seven Springs, where seven springs gush from the ground, merging into a single stream.
Corfu
The greenest island of Greece, Corfu, is washed by the waters of the Ionian Sea. It has long been influenced by Italian culture, and this can still be felt in everything - from the architectural features of the local buildings to the local cuisine. Corfu is a universal resort; it will be good for both families with children and lovers of nightlife. Cultural and excursion leisure is also available on the island - there are many attractions of different eras and interesting museums.
The first tourists come to Corfu already in May, but it is still more comfortable to swim here from the beginning of summer to the end of September, because the island is located in the north of Greece and has a less arid climate than, for example, Crete. In the summer season, Corfu usually maintains an air temperature of about +30 °C, and a water temperature of +24 °C.
The island has both pebble and sandy beaches, many of them are located in cozy bays and small bays. Paleokastritsa is considered the best beach in Corfu - there are many grottoes and underwater caves for diving enthusiasts, and the sand is very soft and clean. Family tourists often relax on Kalamaki Beach - this is a wide sandy strip 1.5 km long with a gentle entrance to the water. Very beautiful views and incredible sunsets await those who choose the beaches of Agios Gordios and Agios Stefanos - this is an ideal place for lovers.
A sightseeing tour of Corfu includes sightseeing of the city of Kerkyra - Paleo Frourio (Old Fortress), built by the Venetians, Neo Frourio (New Fortress), as well as the Cathedral of St. Spyridon of Trimythous. And here is one of the most beautiful squares in Greece - Spianada Square. Kids will love a day at one of the local water parks, Aqualand or Hydropolis. You can always have a snack in one of the local restaurants, where seafood is held in high esteem and the influence of Italian cuisine is very strongly felt. A typical Corfu resident's lunch consists of pastitsio casserole (this is prepared only on the island), tiropitakia cheese pies, stewed partridge or rabbit.
Cos
The island of Kos is located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea and is in great demand among tourists - about 600 thousand guests vacation on Kos every year. The famous founder of medical science, Hippocrates, was born here about 2.5 thousand years ago. A descendant of the plane tree, planted, according to legend, by the healer himself still grows on Kos.
The island has excellent ecology, mild climate, clean beaches and developed infrastructure. Interesting representatives of animals and birds also live here - flamingos, Caretta and loggerhead turtles, Mediterranean seals. Already in early June, it becomes quite hot on Kos - +27...+31 °C, the Aegean Sea warms up to +25 °C in summer - a very pleasant temperature for both children and adults. The beaches on Kos are different - with white, golden and even black sand of volcanic origin. There are also beaches with small pebbles, hidden in small cozy bays. Upon arrival on the island, you can order a transfer directly to your hotel through the Kiwitaxi.com website. Now this is one of the best ways to get to your destination.
One of the most picturesque corners of the island is the village of Kefalos - nearby are the popular beaches of Kamari, Paradise and Agios Stefanos with soft sand and monuments of Roman and medieval architecture.
Nightlife is vibrant in the town of Kardamena, but the beaches here are rocky and wild - for a comfortable beach holiday you will have to drive a little further, to Banana Beach and Atlantis Beach, and at the same time admire the Kos Amphitheater, the ruins of ancient temples and the medieval castle.
❕The main attraction of Kos is the ancient temple of Asklepion, dedicated to the god of medicine (this is where, according to legend, Hippocrates studied). Do not pass by the medieval fortress of the Knights of St. John, dating back to the 15th century, the ruins of the Roman agora and the Casa Romana villa, recreated from the ruins.❕
For children, Kos has everything they need to avoid getting bored - playgrounds, swimming pools with water slides, amusement parks. In the north of Kos there is a Lido water park - not very large, but worthy. You can take your kids to the Plaka Forest Nature Reserve to admire nature and feed the peacocks.
Zakynthos
The island of Zakynthos or Zakynthos is a romantic corner washed by the waters of the Ionian Sea, a favorite vacation spot for family tourists and newlyweds. There are more than 100 km of clean beaches, covered with sand and small pebbles, where you can relax and swim from May to October (but best in June and September, when there is no extreme heat).
It is worth paying attention to the beach in the Argassi area - the sea here is shallow, there are all amenities, and in the summer there are discos in the evenings. The best place to relax with children is on Vasilikos beach - the sand here is soft, golden, and there is also a wide strip of shallow water for kids. You can visit the beaches of Laganas and Gerakas, because giant carriage turtles come here to lay their eggs.
❕The most famous attraction of Zakynthos is natural. This is Navajo Beach in Smugglers Bay, whose name translates as “shipwreck”. The beach is surrounded by snow-white rocks, you can climb them by stairs - the view from the height is amazing. You can only get to Navajo by water - tourists are usually brought to the beach by boat according to a schedule.❕
There are also architectural attractions in Zakynthos - the belfry of St. Dionysius and St. Mark's Square - the “twin sister” of the famous square in Venice. In Argassi you can climb Mount Scopa - this is where, according to myths, the home of the Greek goddess of hunting Artemis was located.
The cuisine in Zakynthos is special, very tasty and aromatic. We recommend ordering “sartsa” – beef with tomatoes, garlic and soft sheep’s cheese. There are several cheese factories on the island, where they make unleavened mizithra cheese, which is then sweetened with sugar or honey. For dessert, coffee is often served with the dessert mandolato (honey with almonds and egg) or pasteli (honey with sesame and almonds).
Santorini
Greek Santorini is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It was formed about 3,500 years ago after a volcanic eruption - every year two million tourists come here to look at the largest volcanic depression (caldera), see local sunsets and admire the snow-white town of Oia with blue roofs. During the season there are a lot of foreigners here - you can hear English more often than Greek. The most convenient way to get to the island is by ferry from Crete or Athens.
It’s worth coming to Santorini not only to spend an unforgettable honeymoon or take memorable photos. The island is famous for its unusual beaches with multi-colored sand - white, red, black. The clearest water is at Ammoudi Beach, which is also a great place for snorkeling. Kolubo and Vlychada are also good - they are not crowded with tourists, but can only be reached by car.
