Six Ways to Make Spending Money While Backpacking

Backpacking is a famously frugal way to travel, but from time to time it’s nice to have a bit more spending money to make the most of our journey. Many people therefore choose to travel and earn money at the same time. Extra money will not only make your trip more comfortable, but may also open up opportunities for a richer experience of the country you’re in and ways to meet new people. Some people even manage to take their job with them as they travel if they have enough flexibility. If you’re trying to think of ways you can make some extra cash while backpacking, here are 6 ideas to get you thinking.

1. Find Seasonal Work

There are farms all over the world which are always in need of extra hands during the harvesting season. You’ll need to be able to get dirty, put in some hard labor, and be outside for a while, but picking flowers, vegetables or fruit can be a great money-earner.

2. Street Performance

If you’ve got creative talents which you can share with the world, what’re you waiting for? Check which streets you are allowed to pitch up at and that you won’t be breaking any local laws, but after that your act is up to you. Playing a musical instrument, dancing, singing, art or acrobatics – a few hours in the right location could earn you more than you might expect.

3. Play for Money Online

While it’s not a guaranteed source of income, smart betters can generate some extra cash for themselves by placing a few well-timed bets on sporting events. Gambling should always be done responsibly and not as a main source of income, but online platforms like Unibet have plenty of fun games and offers for new members.

4. Work on a Resort or Summer Camp

If you have a lot of energy and like meeting new people, getting a job on a resort or summer camp could be ideal. You will usually be hired on a contract basis and you may be restricted to the camp or resort for a while, but the money you earn will make up for this. In addition, you may also get to see some beautiful regions if the camp is in the countryside and, if you get a job on a cruise ship, it could be your ticket around the world.

5. Freelancing

A great way to earn money as you travel is to take on freelance work which you can complete from anywhere in the world. For example, bloggers, web developers or design consultants can put a profile online and accept as much or as little work as they need. Register with Fiverr to find work as a freelancer in a wide range of sectors. You may also be able to tutor young people in languages or something else you have some skill or knowledge in.

6. Be a Tour Guide

When you’ve been travelling in a region and have got pretty familiar with the main sights, you might be able to find a job as a tour guide. Agencies will often hire them for a couple of weeks at a time, or you may be able to take a more casual group of tourists in exchange for voluntary donations.
