Why Southern Ireland is the Perfect Family Summer Destination in 2024

After the last few years, getting away with the family is now more important than ever. After being cooped up, there’s nothing better than visiting a country with an abundance of countryside and fresh air. Ireland is just the place for you and the family!

From the great outdoors, fresh food (no, it’s not just potatoes!), stunning architecture and rich tradition, Ireland has something to offer for everyone.

The beauty of Southern Ireland

Whether you’re listening to live music in Temple Bar, Dublin, viewing the beautiful scenery of Ireland’s oldest national park in Killarney, Co. Kerry or finding the top things to do in West Cork, like kissing the Blarney Stone, you’ll be sure to have the perfect family summer holiday and get the best taste of the Emerald Isle whilst you’re there.

The capital city of Dublin

If you’re heading to Southern Ireland, the capital city of Dublin is a given. There are plenty of famous sites to visit just strolling through the many cobbled streets. The National Leprechaun Museum or Dublin Castle give you a taste of Ireland’s history and legendary tales.

If you’re more of an outdoorsy family, the Viking Splash Tour is great fun, or you can rent a kayak down the River Liffey. When you want some adult time, the Jameson Distillery or Guinness Storehouse are also great experiences.

Birr Castle and Gardens

Heading away from Dublin, Birr Castle and Gardens in Co. Offaly which is home to Ireland's largest treehouse. View the castle gardens, climb the 3 storeys of the famous treehouse in their adventure area and spend some quality time feeding the ducks at the lake. It’s a wholehearted experience for all the family.

Killarney National Park

Head even further south to visit Killarney National Park. It’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with incredible countryside, lakes, woodlands, and mountain views, giving you a real taste of the Emerald Isle. Bring a picnic for some family downtime and enjoy taking in the beautiful scenery for a breath of fresh air.

Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone

Blarney Castle is one of the most popular tourist destinations. It's beautiful and full of rich history, but the main attraction is the Blarney Stone. Granting those who kiss it ‘the gift of the gab’ or the ability to speak confidently so people will have no choice but to listen.

The catch? You need to lie on your stomach and hang your head over the castle’s parapet - so might not be one for those afraid of heights!

Wonderful Waterford

Waterford has so much to offer for families. With its famous Waterford Crystal factory, Copper Coast mini farm or Splashworld, there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

The Irish Flag was flown for the first time in Waterford City. It’s also home to plenty of Viking history, with lots of fun activities for the family to do while you’re visiting.

Southern Ireland’s rich culture, history and charm. From local farms and animals, visiting traditional towns and villages, whale watching along the coast or trekking the trails seeing mountains and lakes, there’s definitely something to do for all the family - and a trip you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
