Avengers Assemble At Their New Disneyland Home

The Avengers are now recruiting at the Disneyland Resort.

After being delayed for nearly a year, Avengers Campus, the new Marvel-themed land at the Disneyland Resort in California finally opened June 4. It was worth the wait.

The first land at a Disney park themed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU for those in the know) is an immersive campus where Avengers train future superheroes. Thanks to Walt Disney Imagineering, extensive knowledge of the MCU isn't required to be engaged in the experience, though it definitely doesn't hurt.

"The idea of a campus bringing together many diverse stories, character groups and aesthetics is unlike any other land we've created," said Scot Drake, portfolio creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering. "And because these stories are so interconnected, we're telling stories at a scale we've never been able to do before."

Marvel fans will have opportunities to interact with favorite superheroes from Black Panther and Black Widow to Captain America and Captain Marvel -- and for the first time at Disneyland, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Plus, eagled-eyed guests will spot Spider-Man flying over the campus, courtesy of a first-of-its-kind stunt robot developed by Imagineers.

The new land also introduces a new ride. Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure is the first Disney attraction themed to your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

During the action-packed 3D adventure at the Worldwide Engineering Brigade (WEB), guests are recruited by Peter Parker/Spider-Man to capture self-replicating Spider-Bots who threaten the campus. Through innovative WEB-designed vehicles, riders can "sling webs" from their wrists like Spider-Man; a cool merchandise "overlay" allows them to purchase WEB Power Bands that enhance their web-slinging abilities.

"The basic mission is always the same, but what the guests do absolutely determines how that adventure plays out," said Brent Strong, executive creative director, Walt Disney Imagineering. "And we've hidden a million easter eggs and fun surprises for people to discover."

With 70-plus years of Marvel stories and 23 blockbuster movies, Imagineers had their work cut out for them but, Drake says, the goal was putting guests in the middle of those stories, and Avengers Campus certainly accomplishes that.
