Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Name Of New Ship, Launching Summer 2022!
Norwegian Cruise Line's next new ship, slated to launch in summer 2022, will be named the Norwegian Prima, the first in a class of the same name.
The Prima class, which has until now been called Project Leonardo, will have six 3,215-passenger vessels. The ship, under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, is a departure for the line, which has mostly worked with German shipyard Meyer Werft.
Harry Sommer, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), said the name Prima, which means "first" in Italian, "is a natural fit that ties into our legacy of firsts in the industry and a fitting tribute to our new Italian shipbuilding partners at Fincantieri."
NCL teased the information ahead of deeper dive into the ship's details on Wednesday.
After sailing a string of inaugural cruises, the Norwegian Prima will launch cruises in Northern Europe from Aug. 17, 2022, to Sept. 13, 2022, offering 10-day sailings from Amsterdam and Copenhagen to Northern Europe, the Norwegian fjords and the Baltic regions.
The Prima will then cross to New York to offer one-off cruises to Bermuda and the Caribbean; one sailing from Galveston, Texas, marking an NCL debut; and one month of cruises from Miami to the Caribbean, before settling into its winter homeport, Orlando.
From Dec. 11, 2022, to March 19, 2023, the Norwegian Prima will homeport in Port Canaveral, sailing 15 round-trip Western Caribbean sailings of five-, seven- and nine-day itineraries to destinations including Cozumel, Mexico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; and NCL's private island, Great Stirrup Cay, in the Bahamas.
The ship will relocate to New York during the spring to offer Bermuda cruises form March 28, 2023, to May 7, 2023, before returning to Northern Europe for the 2023 summer season, offering a mix of 10- and 11-day Norway and Iceland sailings from Reykjavik, Iceland, and Southampton, England.
