Visiting Switzerland

One of the best countries in the world to live, is it really a surprise that Switzerland is one of the most visited countries in Europe.  This landlocked country may not offer sandy beaches but who needs them when you have the beautiful Alps, exciting cities such as Zurich and Lucerne, the jaw dropping Rhine falls and the picturesque Appenzellerland.  Combining Luxury with culture and adventure, Switzerland is a haven for today’s tourist.

The most visited city in Switzerland is Zurich.  This cosmopolitan hub houses a number of architecturally and significant sites.  One of which is the Grossmunster, an old Romanesque church, a symbol of reformed Switzerland, the tower offers stunning views of Zurich.  Nothing illustrates Zurich’s diversity better than the Rietberg Museum, this museum houses Europe’s most amazing collection of Asian art.  For a nice quiet stroll, nothing offers a more beautiful view than a walk alongside Lake Pomenade.  Other fantastic sights in Switzerland include the Chinese Garden, the Kunsthaus, Lindenhof and the coffee museum.  One of the most popular activities to do in Zurich is to quite simply shop and the country is renowned for its chocolate.  For chocolate lovers, Sprungli is the place to go in Zurich- its flagship store on Paradeplatz offers a wide variety of chocolates, the unique Luxemburgerli (a sweet pastry and cream snack that resembles a burger) and the Grand Cru Sauvage truffle.  This is also the perfect place to enjoy a fine breakfast lunch or afternoon tea.  For an authentic Swiss meal the Zunfthaus Zur Waag restaraunt is the best place to visit.  Hotel Widder is the ideal hotel to stay in when in Zurich, located in the Old Town, this hotel offers a unique service and is regarded by many as the best in Zurich.  The ALDEN Hotel Splügenschloss is a boutique hotel located on a small side street and offers an attractive alternative.

Located near Zurich you can find the largest waterfall in Europe, known as the Rhine falls.  Easily accessible by car, bike and even public transport the Rhine falls have been visited for decades.  There are number of viewing platforms located on both sides of the Rhine offering spectacular views of the falls.  Another way to see the falls is via a boat trip, fly over or while enjoying a meal at the Schloss Worth Castle.

A truly hidden gem located an hour outside of Zurich is Appenzellerland.  Recommended to us by our expert in the region, Appenzellerland is known for its picturesque green hills and rugged mountains seen in the movies.  To truly learn about Swiss culture and tradition a visit to Appenzell is a must.  Here you can discover Swiss traditions such as painting, yodelling, dance, the Alpabzug (the trek of cows up the alpine) and Silvesterklausen ( men dressed in traditional clothes with bells.  Appenzell has a long and rich history in mineral water production and beautiful colourful houses.  Appenzellerland is a great place to enjoy a round of golf, go hiking, biking and even paragliding.

A trip to Switzerland will not be complete with out a visit to the Alps.  Mount Titiilus is one of the tallest peaks and offers incredible views.  On your way up you will pass by a number of ski slopes, hotels as well as the Glacier Grotto.  Tunnelled over 100 feet below the surface this innovative route is certainly one of the highlights of visiting Titilus.  Mount titilus is also home to the first revolving aerial cableway in the world known as the Rotair.  The Trubsee Alpine Lodge is great place to stay, enjoy the views and go out for a spot of Skiing.  The hotel terrace is a Luxury Hotel located near Titilus, built in 1903.  This Art Noveau building offers a sauna, a golf course and meeting rooms as well as free Wi-Fi.

A quaint small town, Lucerne, is certainly Switzerland’s dark horse.  The most famous of Lucerne’s landmarks is Chapel Bridge, built in the 14th Century.  You will see hundreds of pictures of medieval city life and history.  Another popular site in Lucerne is the KKL, a stunning building playing host to the Lucerne art gallery and a number of Concert Halls.  The Richard Wagner Museum has recently undergone renovation and reorganisation; it will reopen hopefully next year.  In Lucerne you can’t help but be distracted by the panoramic views of Mount Palatus and majestic Rigi in the Swiss Alps.  For the best Schnitzel money can buy head on over to the Old Swiss house restaurant were its prepared next to the table.  The Palace Luzern has somewhat of an old world charm combined with modern comforts and is great hotel to stay at.  For beautiful views of the Lake Lucerne and the mountains, the architecturally named Art-Deco Hotel Montana provides beauty on the outside as well as in.
